RE: Uncle DT's Random Image Thread - Kruger - 07-09-2024

Damn, that makes me want to go find an ST off of ebay or something and get it running, just so I can play it again on real hardware.  I remember those snappy quotes, and the disappointment when it came back with some of them with the obligatory bird flashed in the direction of the screen.  Not like the computer ever cared...

RE: Uncle DT's Random Image Thread - Blaze - 07-10-2024

I fired up the emulator last night and played a game - got to take the Lotus home. And I still give the bird to the computer - mostly at work because too many of their processes don't work or are too convoluted and piss me off...

Man, I really need to find that adapter that lets me plug an Atari joystick into USB so I can use it and have that better experience.  I'm still all thumbs using the keyboard to play games...

RE: Uncle DT's Random Image Thread - Blaze - 07-10-2024

I play using my gamepad and it's tough because the analog thumbstick screws with my muscle memory when using it as a digital controller. But I'm with you, I need to build that Atari joystick to USB adapter...

That reminds me a lot of the 5200.  While my friend John and I had the 2600, along with some other kids around the neighborhood, my friend Scott got the 5200.  Comparatively, the graphics completely blew away anything else out there.  The games were a lot closer to what we saw in the arcade and I loved playing Galaxian on it.  Up to a point.  Unfortunately, the controllers were analog and absolutely sucked.  They made even the simple task of controlling a sideways moving starship, or vertically/horizontally moving yellow pizza that eats dots virtually impossible.  Needless to say, the general consensus was that while the games were better, the joysticks made them unplayable...

When you make that adapter, you'll need to add an adjustable autofire to the schematic as well.

RE: Uncle DT's Random Image Thread - Blaze - 07-12-2024

I know that same kind of pain. My friend had a Colecovision and the graphics were just amazing, but that controller could cramp your hand and thumb faster than losing your first yellow dot eating pizza life...

RE: Uncle DT's Random Image Thread - Kruger - 07-12-2024

Ok, flip the coin.  Do you remember the first time you played on a 2600?  We had one of those pong games at home.  So besides the tennis, hockey, squash, and one or two others, there was the skeet and trap games that used the gun.  One night we were visiting Uncle Alby and Hazel and their son David had a 2600 with a handful of games.  Besides Combat, he had Circus, Night Driver, Skydiver, Bowling, Outlaw, Activision's Boxing and Dragster.  There may have been others, but those are the ones that I clearly remember playing.  The graphics were awesome, the game play was awesome, it was like nothing we had seen before.  Damn we played that until late and when we left, we knew we had to get one...

I don't remember the first time because it was between two people. We had that Radio Shack pong system and I loved it. It didn't have any light gun but then again I never knew something like even existed then. So, the first time playing the Atari 2600 was either Asteroid at this old guys house (to be fair, he was probably 20 or so) or Maze Craze at this girls house that we would sometimes hang around with - her mom was kinda mean and the girl went to a catholic school so we didn't really see her that often. When we did get an Atari 2600 it was actually the Sears VCS and it didn't come with Combat but instead Target Fun and its 27 shooting games...

(Sorry, I was in PA at the farm for a week...)

Nostalgia is kinda funny.  I fondly remember all of those games and how much fun we had playing them.  But bust out a retro gaming system and they are still fun.  But to a point...

RE: Uncle DT's Random Image Thread - Blaze - 07-24-2024

(I hope you had fun)

Yeah, nostalgia is good for a little while. It gives that little hit of dopamine good for about 15 minutes. Although, I still like me some modern day video gaming. Too bad I still can't afford the video cards...

RE: Uncle DT's Random Image Thread - Kruger - 07-24-2024

(Last week was good.  I got to see mom, dad, Sue, Hunter, Regan and Wyatt.  Yup, Hunter and Regan have a little boy now...)

I honestly can't remember the last time I played a "modern" video game.  What sticks out in memory was either the last time I was at Kim's after turkey day, at Rob's and we all played on his PSII, or that time at Hank's when he hooked up his MAME controller to his TV.  Though I don't think that last one counts as "modern games."

RE: Uncle DT's Random Image Thread - Blaze - 07-25-2024

(Oh wow, nice)

Dang, that was a long time ago. We still get together with Kim and do some LAN gaming with 20+ year old titles. I think I'll be a gamer until the end of days. I don't play any of those AAA game releases - they're too expensive and usually hot garbage - more eye candy than substance. It's how I wind down my day since I don't watch any real kind of TV show and series, so I play this (it's a real time sink)...

RE: Uncle DT's Random Image Thread - Kruger - 07-25-2024

I think you also wind down your day responding to this thread as well....

RE: Uncle DT's Random Image Thread - Blaze - 07-25-2024

I really do. There's been a few times where I'll spend a couple hours replying - trying to find that perfect image or falling down a rabbit hole while doing so - or like this one, if you can't find it then just make it yourself. You want your ski? Go get it...

RE: Uncle DT's Random Image Thread - Kruger - 07-26-2024

I'm usually looking for an appropriate response while I'm on calls that I have no reason to be on.  And sometimes I do end up down the rabbit hole and never find what I'm looking for so end up procrastinating 'til the next day...
