I think MIDI was one of those things that was way ahead of its time but didn't end up like other things way ahead of their time. It's a simple protocol and having a few collaborators define the specs because they all felt that there needed to be a standard so that all manufacturers could grow. I wish all tech companies behaved this way but nooooooooo...
